There are many Bible passages that admonish us to keep our eyes fixed on
Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2). My mind goes back to
the plague of snakes in the wilderness where the children of Israel only had to
look at the bronze serpent and they would live. A clear metaphor of how we are
to look to Jesus and also live.
How should this play out in our daily lives? “If our eyes are fixed on Jesus,
we shall see a compassionate Redeemer, and shall catch light from His
countenance” MYP 404. So, when you think about God, if you think of anything
other than a compassionate Redeemer, then your eyes are not fixed on Him.
Many Christians only give Him a passing glance, or superficial look as they
present to Him their daily list of requests. Few make it their habit to really fix
their eyes on Him. And in the absence of that fixed gaze, the devil steps in and
paints a picture of a God who is cruel, judgemental, and unloving.
Those that do see a compassionate Saviour are filled with peace, reflect joy,
and have a hope that cannot be extinguished. If your view of God is anything
but this, I encourage you to look again. In fact, stare at Him. All day. Every day.
I promise you, it’s not rude; and will change your life.
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set
before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right
hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2.
